Finnish CBG statistics 2016 published
Finnish RES-T methane statistics of the year 2016 were published by the University of Eastern Finland (Lampinen 2017). The study was written in Finnish, but an English summary "RES-T methane market in Finland 2016" has been provided in this server for the international audience. In this news release the main results are given.
In 2016 like always since 1941, when transportation use of renewable methane began, only waste based reactor biogas was utilized, and it was used only as CBG100 (i.e. blends of renewable and fossil methane were not available).
1. RES-T methane production
Purified biogas was produced in 88 plants, but since 2008 it has not been utilized in vehicles. Ten purified biogas production plants were connected to 11 biogas upgrading plants, of which 2 were taken into operation in 2016. All biogas upgrading plants supplied fuel to vehicle filling stations, but some of them produced upgraded biogas also for heating applications. Annual production capacity of upgraded biogas increased by a third to 200 GWh/a.
2. Supply of RES-T methane
RES-T methane was available at 24 public CBG100 stations and many private CBG100 stations. The public CBG100 station network did not change during 2016, but some changes took place in the private CBG100 station network.
3. Consumption of RES-T methane
CBG consumption dropped by 6 % in 2016 compared to previous year. This was the first year, when CBG consumption has decreased, since CBG was re-introduced in the Finnish market in 2002.
